The thrust required for vertical flight is 1.15 times the aircraft weight, the goal is to build the model with an all up weight (AUW) of under 9 pounds. The fans chosen for the task are WeMoTec HW620 fans. The images below show the complete package (shown without inlet and outlet moulded ducts), the 6 blade fan and the stators and engine mount assembly, the whole unit is 80g in weight. The 'Build' section shows the rear fans 'cut short' to allow full rotation, also dropping the weight to 60g/fan.
The motors used to power the fans are three brushless Plettenberg HP220/30/A3 S P4, with Schulze 35bo controllers which can take up to 30 cells.
The cells used are 24 x 2400mAh, all computer matched. The cells are 1475g in weight with 4mm 'zero loss' gold plated connections. The ESC/motor/battery location is optimised to ensure that the leads from the cells to the ESC's are as short as possible, reducing the possibility of 'power spikes' into the ESC's.
